Nintendo confirms that "expansion of the gaming population" is no longer aimed - Wii - Video Peeling news, instructions, exemplary procedures, reviews and culture
And that ends the era of the Blue Ocean.
If there is one thing on the Nintendo has always been aiming for, it is to move more people to play. This tendency reached a highlight of DS and Wii, where they explicitly challenged the "Blue Ocean" and expanded the play population to promote the sale of their products. But already before, the company always sought a broader population layer as Sony, Sega or Microsoft.
However, that's something that the company will not do anymore. Shuntaro Furukawa, President of Nintendo, confirmed in conversation with investors in a financial interview that the gaming audience has already been expanded thanks to the smartphone gaming boom. Instead of wasting time to increase the range of an already expanded medium, Nintendo will now try to interest this extended target group by exposing its intellectual property for your products. This means that Nintendo still makes games that respond to everyone, mind you - but they will no longer explicitly try to make games like Blue Ocean Wii fit in his time.
"The current market environment for smart device applications shows signs of maturity and competition is getting harder," Furukawa said. "Besides, it is becoming increasingly difficult to create different gaming experiences on different devices. And with the dissemination of intelligent devices, the game population has grown rapidly, and Nintendos dedicated video game products are no longer available. We will continue to offer products that are not limited to the definition of "game" and provide the various consumers entertainment, regardless of region, gender or age. The term "gaming population growth" itself does not fit into the current situation.
If you think about it, that makes sense - the switch was a success on the back of products that clearly focus on core gamers, eg. B. Games like The legend of Zelda: Breath of Wildris or Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Although Nintendos games are always a broader attraction than most other games, but I find it good that the company acknowledges that the "expansion of the gaming audience" is a futile undertaking when smartphones already do so good work (though Nintendo himself does not cut as well in this regard as they could. I think Nintendo, which focuses only on developing great games that respond from nature to all, will end up lead to a much better edition.
