Interview: "Guardians of the Galaxy has nothing to do with Marvel's Avengers"

Square Enix remains loyal to the superheroes. After the rather maues "Marvel's Avengers" is already the "Guardians of the Galaxy" presented as part of the Electronic Entertainment Expo 2021 in the starting blocks.

The Eidos Montreal editors, together with two other German game magazines, had the chance to lead a detailed video interview with Mary Demarle, Senior Narrative Director at Eidos Montreal shortly after the announcement, Senior Narrative Director at Eidos Montreal, and Senior Producer Olivier Proulx.

In conversation, the two clear up with some rumors and explain what "Guardians of the galaxy" is in detail.

Eidos Montreal: "Guardians of the galaxy" was presented to the public at the Electronic Entertainment Expo 2021. How did you perceive the previous feedback?

Olivier Proulx: Oh, we are very happy with the reactions. Many people are pleased that "Guardians of the Galaxy" is a pure singleplayer game. In addition, many like the gameplay, the music and the humor. We worked for years at this moment and now to see the reactions is really exciting.

I have read a few times that "Guardians of the Galaxy is just a re-skin of Marvel's Avengers". Is there a connection between the two games or exist assets that use both projects?

Olivier Proulx: No, not at all! "Guardians of the galaxy" does not even use the same Game engine. "Guardians of the galaxy" has nothing to do with "Marvel's Avengers". Both games were partly developed in parallel. There are two completely different projects of different teams. In "Guardians of the Galaxy" everything revolves around the group, but as a player one takes exclusively Star Lord. Would the prerequisites have not been ideal for a co-op adventure? And were there conversations about whether one could change at least the figures?

Mary Demarle: Of course we have discussed such ideas internally in the initial phase. But then we realized that in "Guardians of the galaxy" everything revolves around the entire group of extraordinary characters. You just want to spend time with these figures. Peter Quill Alias Star Lord is in the center of the "Guardians". He is the leader and as a person he serves stronger for us as an identification figure. He must constantly react to his unpredictable team colleagues. Decisions are an important element in the game. The idea behind it is to experience what consequences the players of the player for Star Lord but also for the entire group. When that was clear, we thought about how we can actively install Peter and his relationship with the group in the gameplay and in the fighting or even when exploring the game world.

Olivier Proulx: The team gives the entire time about feedback, released around or commented on the events otherwise. You get the impression that is really part of that of the group.

How do the decisions actually affect the game? Are there different ways dependent on the decisions taken?

Mary Demarle: Basically, there is only one beginning and an end to each player. In between, however, the decisions are an important part and change the situations and tasks. In the E3 demo you were asked if your Rocket or Groot want to sell. This choice is changing the following gaming experience in Lady Lightbender's fortress massive. So there are branches, but you are always returning to the main history. In addition to the "Guardians", of course, you also meet other figures in the course of the game. And finally, your decisions determine who will battle your "secret weapon" in the final. So there are immediate consequences, but also which you learn more later in the game.

Olivier Proulx: In the E3 demo you could see a short shine that indicated how Rocket feels after being thrown by Drax over the bridge. We have long thought about whether we leave this feature in the game. But we knew about playtests and feedback rounds that players like to talk about these moments and discuss their experiences. Sometimes it becomes clear only later, which actions may have resulted in a consequence later.

Is there a kind of overview of the decisions made or the story itself in the game? What about a New Game + in "Guardians of the Galaxy"?

Olivier Proulx: No, there is no overview in this case. Nevertheless, the game has a high playback value - just through the great dialogues and the decisions. But of course we have a New Game +. So you can take the game again with all unlocked skills and costumes. In addition, you can select individual chapters and play certain moments again.

The "Guardians" seem to have four skills each. How many talents do the figures have and how does the progress system work?

Olivier Proulx: RIGHT, EVERY "GUARDIAN" owns four skills that you can perform in combat and "summon". Each figure initially has a capability, but has different combat properties. Drax For example, opponents can get well out of balance, Rocket on the other hand aligns area damage. Groot heals and protects his teammates. Gamora is extremely fast and suggests from all directions. So you have to think about which skills you use. Each figure has a moment in the course of history in which she grows beyond. This will give it a second ability to do so. All others free them with experience points, which in turn are more geared to those oriented with sketched characteristics of the figures.

Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019) - Zombie Iron Man Scene (6/10) | Movieclips We have also seen in the E3 demo how Star-Lord turns on his Walkman and activates a kind of focus mode with "Bad Reputation" by Joan Jett. Are there any other gameplay elements in which music is used?

Olivier Proulx: That was the Huddle feature and we have reproduced it a little shortened. You activate it after you have filled an energy bar in combat. The group comes together and Peter must hold a motivational speech. These speeches are loosely based on song texts. If you have held a good address, all team members will win bonuses in strength and tempo. Was the speech bad, only Star-Lord receives a bonus because he still thinks he has a good talk and mega is proud of him. We have around 30 licensed songs in the game - Iron Maiden, New Kids on the Block, Kiss and many others. Music is an important part.

Mary Demarle: Of course we use the music on certain moments in history and give it even more power. But there is on the Milano, the spaceship of the "Guardians of the Galaxy", also a Jukebox. You can listen to the music while talking about other characters or exploring the ship.

Can we fly the Milano itself and are there planets away from the main history we explore or visit?

Olivier Proulx: We have integrated some extraordinary gameplay sequences. The Milano gets his chance, do not worry. But we also sprinkle puzzle and exploration facilities in between.

Mary Demarle: But there are no side quests in the game. It would be strange to leave the "Guardians" back and just make his own thing. But we have different planets and facilities in the game. Some of these places come directly from us, others from the Marvel Universe.

Olivier Proulx: We also reward the exploration of the locations. For example, your components can be used to build Rocket tools or even story items that you analyzed in Milano. There are also over 30 costumes - all hidden in the game, free from microtransactions.
